'Inside Out' - Sarah Wong beautifully captures the lives of transgender kids

September 21, 2017

"At the end we’re all the same - souls who want to be happy and live compassionately." - Sarah Wong

Huffington Post journalist James Michael Nichols asked Dutch photographer Sarah Wong a very simple, but significant questionin his article -

"Why, as a photographer, is providing these stories and experiences visibility so important?"

And she answered perfectly.

"...It's very important for society to see these images - there's nothing sensational about transgender kids. Again, at the end we’re pretty much the same: we’re all souls who want to live happy and give meaning to our life and others..."

With the help of Hollywood (and stars like Laverne Cox, Andreja Pejic, Caitlyn Jenner, Isis King, Conchita Wurst) - the public has become MUCH more accepting of people who identify as transgender. Slowly, mainstream TV series are even stepping up to the plate. Hollywood and inclusion? Two words I bet no one would have put in the same sentence 10 years ago.

The point of this post is, basically, society is finally starting to recognise the importance of visibility for minority groups. Positive visibility in the media (usually) translates to eventual acceptance. So - why can't this be the case for people with a disability? We'll cover that in an upcoming post.

Sarah Wong's beautiful images can be seen in her book: Inside Out: Portraits of Cross-Gender Children. Along with words by Ellen Visser.

Available through Amazon.

Another v special person in my life is leaving me, to unwillingly return home - back to the U.K. Dave, even though you try and put on a tough exterior and refuse to smile in photos, you have the biggest heart. And that’s why people are drawn to you. I know you’ll end up back here one way or another. Until August my friend, I’ll miss you like mad. ♥️♥️♥️ Josephine May Flett (Nanna) 1934 - 2019. What a lady. What a wardrobe. Thanks for the precious memories Nanna ♥️💫 #family The end is near, it’s the last leg of our journey home but we have a lifetime of memories from this amazing holiday to keep. Spending so much precious family/friends time in the UK, NYE in Denmark then driving over the famous Oserund Bridge to Sweden. Beautiful Gothenburg and Stockholm were fantastic. Thanks Finland, Helsinki was like living in a real-life snow globe then, Lapland...oh Lapland. The first time I’ve experienced -17 degree weather and loved it. Norway gifted us with the first class airport and so much history. Then flying to our dream destination - Lofoten Islands. I cant put this place into words, if you want to know about it I’ll gladly tell you but be prepared - this place is dear to our hearts and many others. For one thing, it was the first time we witnessed the Northern Lights in action. Tromso was an experience - husky sledding through the forest and the actual fear of frost bite. Flying into Iceland a lil sick but still managing to see an incredible amount. From glaciers, waterfalls, the black sand beach and of course, spending the night in a Bubbble enveloped in snow, under the stars with champagne and once again, with the northern lights for company. Topping it off, we returned to the UK and squeezed in extra time with the family, dear friends, yummy food, cosy pubs with kitty’s lazying by the fire.
The ‘trip of a lifetime’ yes it was. Most importantly, every minute, every new destination, laugh, challenge and feeling - experienced with my now fiancé. Let’s keep exploring the world together x
